Better sleep, one honest catalogue

Update: I’ve now had this mattress for 10 years. It’s been relegated to the guest room since we upgraded to a king size, but everyone who sleeps on it is comfortable and likes it.

I have a herniated disc in my lower back that I manage on an ongoing basis. I didn't want to continue getting steroid shots in my back and the doctor indicated that I needed to have a bed that was going to eliminate the pressure on my spine and hips. I was contemplating purchasing a very expensive mattress but decided I would try this first. I read several reviews on the "best" mattress toppers for back pain and this one showed up consistently. I agree with the reviews... it works and is affordable.

My boyfriend and I began having back troubles on our current bed, and were in desperate need of a new mattress, despite his protest. He didn't want to spend the money, and any time I would catch him stretching his back in pain he would play it off like it was nothing. FINALLY I convinced him to look at mattresses with me, and not only that, but I must have laid out a very persuasive proposal, for I talked him into upsizing to a King! So, we ventured out one weekend to a local Ashley Furniture store to begin getting a ballpark figure on how much this investment would run us, being that we had to now purchase a new bed frame as well. The sales lady, when I questioned her about the therapeutic and memory foam type mattresses, informed me that a King size purchase of that type would run us well over 2-grand for the mattress set alone. Well, needless to say I put that option out of my head, and we narrowed our search to only spring mattress sets. I found myself leaning toward a mattress set of either the Sealy or Serta brand, so the sales representative estimated a total that included the mattress, box springs, and a bed frame we were fond of, and the total was near two-grand. We told her we would think about it and we left the store.

People have completely different views on this. I bought this in 2018 and still have it. And decided I will leave a review because it still allows me to sleep pain free for 5 years. I have a 20 year old mattress that is still in pretty good condition but few years ago my lower back started hurting and my hips as well. I’d start waking up in pain and dreaded getting a new mattress (let’s face it, they can be expensive). Instead I thought I’d give this a try. I bought the two layer system because I did not know which would work or if either would. For me the soft pillowy thing on top hurt my my back and hips worse. It was too soft and I found it makes me too hot rather then cooler. So I got rid of it. But the foam sponge for the last 5 years makes me sleep comfortably throughout the night without an ounce of pain. The chemical smell it comes with went away quite quickly. Since I am a side sleeper and sleep like a rock (I don’t shift, toss or turn) it adjusts, cools me off and gave an old mattress a new life. 5 years later and it still works and has not deteriorated one bit. I know some people like the pillow topper, but for me it did not work. It probably depends on your body and how you sleep. If you turn a lot maybe the pillow top makes that easier. My point it before you get a new mattress try it. This is a good one to go with because it provides the two options and give you a chance to see which, either or both work for you. This was a sleep solution I needed.

I have to say, I was wary of a mail order foam mattress, but the Sleep Innovations 12-in Shiloh mattress has exceeded all my expectations!!

This topper is SO soft and amazing! I've had this topper for two weeks now and every time I slide into bed I find myself noticing how comfy it is. My only complaint is the topper holds in the heat like crazy. My spouse and I both kick all the sheets off after only a couple of hours whereas the foam topper we had before didn't have this issue. In the Winter this will probably be a welcome issue but in the Summer it's not ideal. Overall, the comfort is worth the heat.
